Getafe have completed the signing of Jaime Mata from newly promoted La Liga side Real Valladolid.
After the delight and joy of promotion, Valladolid have been brought back crashing down to earth with news that striker Mata has now joined the Coliseum Alfonso Perez outfit.
MARCA claimed last month that the Valladolid’s top scorer refused to deny speculation linking him with the Madrid based club after promotion with a two legged play-off final victory over Numancia, with Mata scoring an injury time second leg equaliser to put the cherry on the cake.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed by far the most prolific season of his career by scoring 35 goals in 45 games in 2017/18 and could now join up with Jose Bordalas and co.
With his contract running out this summer, Mata has now moved on a free transfer to the his new club in what may prove to be a smart acquisition for Getafe.
It means that Mata will finally get his chance in the Spanish top flight either way, having won promotion through the play-offs at the third attempt having failed in two attempts with Girona, departing for Valladolid ahead of the campaign in which Pablo Machin finally got his Catalan side promotion.
However, some fans may not be convinced given that he does not have youth on his side and 2017/18 was the first season in which he has even reached double figures for goals whilst playing in Spain’s top two divisions.
