Atletico Madrid are close to agreeing terms with Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins, according to reports in Spanish press.
The 23-year-old was one of a number of players who attempted to cancel their contracts with the Portuguese club last month after a bitter fall-out with the club’s hierarchy.
Marca are amongst those media outlets in Spain reporting that a deal is almost complete with Martins having rejected the chance to move to England with Arsenal and Liverpool.
Martins has made 125 appearances for the Lisbon-based club and has won 19 caps for his country, including featuring in their unsuccessful World Cup campaign this month.
The winger netted 13 goals in 52 games for Sporting last season, but saw his time at the club come to a bitter sweet end due to problems.
Rui Patricio, Daniel Podence, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Martins and Dost all attempted to cancel their deals with the Portuguese outfit.
The decision of each player came after several incidents involving the club’s fans, which saw groups of Ultras attacking the players at the club’s training ground.
These outbursts came after Sporting failed to qualify for the Champions League, and a Facebook incident which involved all players earlier this year when club president Bruno De Carvalho suspended 19 of the club’s players.
