Make or break time for Denis Suarez

Make or break time for Denis Suarez

July 26, 2018 0 By Ernesto Hernandez

Denis Suarez knows that this season may be his last to make a good impression. If he is to solidify any sort of spot in the Barcelona team, this might be his last opportunity.

Denis spoke to the media during Barcelona’s U.S. tour. He knows that with the departure of Andres Iniesta, there’s a spot open in the starting XI.

Denis said, “I’m desperate for this to be the definitive year for me and to be more involved than I have been in previous seasons. I feel like this year will be different. I hope to take advantage of gaps left by those who are no longer here.”

While Barcelona have signed players like Arthur and Malcom and promoted Carles Aleña from the B team, Denis does have an advantage over them. He’s played enough with the team where he’s already integrated with the style of play as well as his teammates. As we’ve seen with past signings, it takes a while for them to blend and gel with the team. This might be the case for both Brazilians. With regards to Aleña, he’s currently recovering from surgery and won’t be expected back until October.

He’s also spoken with manager, Ernesto Valverde, to get a grasp of how he may be utilized.

He added, “I’ve spoken with him just like others have. My intention is to stay and his is that I stay here too. I’ll try to convince him that I can play and I’ve given my absolute best in this preseason camp.”

Denis knows that this preseason will be his final shot to make it as a Barcelona player. Especially since there’s still talk that Barcelona is interested in other midfielders such as PSG’s Rabiot and Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong.

Again, Iniesta’s departure opens up a spot and other players aside from Denis will also be looking to impress and make a case for themselves.

Denis was signed by Barcelona from Manchester City back in 2013 and played a few season in Barcelona B. After that, he went on loan to Sevilla and then Villarreal in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

It was his performances with Villarreal that prompted Barcelona to bring him back in 2016 where many saw him as a potential replacement for the aforementioned Iniesta. However, he’s been unable to impress during his time back and has been used sparingly by Luis Enrique and Valverde.

With rumors of an impending exit for Andre Gomes, another midfielder, Denis Suarez knows it’s now or never.
