Sergi Roberto lamented not going to the World Cup with Spain. The Barcelona midfielder spoke candidly about a variety of topics in a press conference before their game against Roma in the International Champions Cup. One of those topics was being left off the squad by former manager, Julen Lopetegui.
He said, “I thought I was going to go but the manager decided on other players. I had no choice but to enjoy my vacation and watch in on television.”
With former Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique, now at the helm, the chances of Sergi Roberto being involved with the national team could be greater. They both know each other and Luis Enrique knows of the player’s versatility.
“For me, Luis Enrique was very important,” Roberto added. “He gave me my debut with Barcelona B and then in the first team gave me an opportunity I needed and wanted, though not in my usual position.”
For now, Sergi Roberto is not too preoccupied with the Spanish national team. Instead, he’s centered on doing well with Barcelona and earning a starting spot. He knows that there have been some signings in midfield and that there is potential for more to come.
However, all he is looking for is a chance to play whether it be in midfield or as a right-back. All he wants is an opportunity to help the team regardless of where the manager decides to play him. In their first preseason game against Tottenham, he was used in the centre of the pitch. We’ll have to wait and see where Valverde decides to use him for the remaining preseason games.
