Atleti new boys feature in draw against StuttgartAugust 6, 2018
Summer signings Thomas Lemar and Gelson Martins both made their unofficial debuts for Atletico Madrid last night, playing the first half in a 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Diego Simeone fielded a strong side in Germany, with new arrivals Antonio Adan and Rodri joining Lemar and Gelson on the field. Juanfran, Angel Correa and Saul also featured for an Atleti side captained by Koke.
Although the first half ended goalless, both teams had an even amount of chances to break the deadlock. Erik Thommy and Mario Gomez both saw chances go wide for the hosts, whereas Angel Correa, Saul and Roberto Olabe all had missed opportunities for the visitors. Gelson Martins found himself offside on numerous occasions and it looks as if the Portuguese winger will need more time to adapt to Simeone’s more direct approach.
The second half started with the visitors substituting all of their star players for a more youthful side. The Bundesliga side grabbed the first goal of the game in the 58th minute when Daniel Didavi scored a penalty having been brought down in the box by Francisco Montero.
Two minutes later, Atletico grabbed the equaliser. A Victor Mollejo pass found Joaquin Munoz outside the box and the youngster saw his shot reach the bottom right corner to even the score.
Stuttgart had the opportunity to win the match after winning another penalty. Aitor Punal brought down Borna Sosa in the 73rd minute, however Antonio Adan successfully saved Thommy’s penalty and the game ended as a draw.
Atleti welcomed back World Cup winners Antoine Griezmann and Lucas Hernandez to training this morning, and the side will fly to Sardinia later for another pre-season warm up match against Cagliari on Wednesday.
