Athletic Bilbao boss Eduardo Berizzo has struggled to find consistency ahead of the La Liga season opener with Leganes.
The former Sevilla coach has been fairly active in his preparations this summer but their are growing concerns ahead of the first game of the season after he has been unable to field a regular eleven, despite not conceding a goal.
12 goals in their opening three pre-season games with none conceded came against lower Spanish opposition in the shape of Santutxu, Barakaldo and Amorebieta – whilst a bigger test came against Real Sociedad, whom they beat 1-0.
Berizzo, who is now keen to keep the same eleven for the upcoming games against Hannover 96 and Augsburg; wants to build on the momentum and develop a strong side.
Keeper options on Berizzo’s mind
Iago Herrerin and Alex Remiro have been largely used during pre-season, but it is of no doubt that Kepa Arrizabalaga will hold down the number one spot.
The question however is who will pose as first-choice back up to the Spanish international.
Speaking over the weekend after the win over La Real, Berizzo touched on his squad and his keeper options.
“I will have three goalkeepers until the math says two, although anyone has the quality to play in my opinion,” he said. “I have gone through two options, one, which a keeper is good for the league and one, where another is good for the cup. We will see if I rotate them.”
Athletic Bilbao face Leganes on the opening day of the season on 20th August at the new San Mames.
