Thibaut Courtois joins Real Madrid; Kovacic to ChelseaAugust 8, 2018
Real Madrid and Chelsea have tonight announced that an agreement has been found for the permanent transfer of Belgian shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois and Mateo Kovacic heads in the opposite direction on loan.
The 26 year old joins Los Blancos on a six year deal and will be in Madrid to agree personal terms and a medical will all take place tomorrow. Then Courtois will be presented to the World’s media at the Bernabeu at 1pm Spanish Time.
Madrid have payed €35m for Courtois who has just recently won the golden glove award at the World Cup with Belgium and also helped the Red Devils to a third place finish. Courtois has wanted a move back to Spain for a while now and Madrid have helped his dream come true.
Moving in the opposite direction is Croatian star Mateo Kovacic who joins the blues on a season long loan, Kovacic has made it no secret of his desires to leave Madrid due to lack of game time, He was restricted to only 21 league games last season and is seen by many as the fourth choice central midfielder behind fellow Croatian Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro.
Kovacic had even met with new manager Julen Lopetegui to discuss his future and indicated to Lopetegui of his desires for a new challenge elsewhere.
Chelsea have been able to sanction this big deal due to the fact that they are close to signing Kepa from Athletic Bilbao.
