Athletic Bilbao president Josu Urrutia may attempt a second bid for Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal, La Liga News UK understands.
Having seen young Spanish international Kepa leave the club on Wednesday for a move to Stamford Bridge and Premier League side Chelsea – the Basque club have been left with a healthy bank balance.
No replacement is expected to be signed by head coach Eduardo Berizzo, who remains keen on Iago Herrerin playing as first choice for the upcoming season.
However, we understand that Urrutia is keen to spend some of the cash received and has indicated Oyarzabal as an option.
A potential move would follow the recent acquisition of Inigo Martinez who swapped Basque clubs in the January transfer window.
Oyarzabal has been performing at a very high standard in recent seasons and it is understood that Athletic made a move last month but saw it rejected.
The youngster has a release clause of €60m at La Real but that is a figure – Athletic, can now make.
Any such deal will need to be hurried with the Spanish transfer window set to close at the end of August and ideally Berizzo wants to have his full squad for the opening game of the season next weekend.
