Diego Simeone has said he knows just how Real Madrid will set out against his Atleti side on Wednesday evening.
The Champions League holders have seen the departures of head coach Zinedine Zidane and star player Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, with new boss Julen Lopetegui adding Thibault Courtois, Alvaro Odriozola and Vinicius Junior to Los Blancos’ squad.
And, Simeone, who has paid attention to Lopetegui’s style of play in recent times with the Spanish national side – says he knows how they will setup in Estonia.
“We want to improve on last season. Expectations are high and we know what’s demanded of us. [Real Madrid are] going to play a different style; they press you high and want to control the game in your half.
“Lopetegui had that same philosophy as Spain boss. The most important thing tomorrow is emotion and a desire to win. That’s what we’ll have. Everyone in the squad.”
There has also been a number of comings and goings at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Diego Simeone seeing contributors to last season’s Europa League win such as Kevin Gameiro, Sime Vrsaljko and captain Gabi leave the Spanish capital, with Santiago Arias, Thomas Lemar, Nikola Kalinic and Antonio Adan just a few who have officially became Rojiblancos over the summer break.
Atleti include World Cup winners Lemar, Antoine Griezmann and Lucas Hernandez in the squad for Wednesday’s clash. Fellow new signings Gelson Martins and Rodri have also travelled alongside new primary captain Diego Godin.
