Abelardo Fernandez took great positives from their 3-0 defeat to Barcelona and feels his Alaves side has what it takes to stay up for a third consecutive campaign.
Alaves started the game well and went into the interval level, but as legs begun to tire, Lionel Messi and co made way.
The Argentine scored twice, while Philippe Coutinho also made the score-sheet despite finding the woodwork on two occasions.
Positives to take
Abelardo had special mention for the way his team carried out their defensive duties and felt they were unlucky not to score.
“We had a good match defensively,” he told reporters after the game. “You always have to defend against Barca.
“If we play like we did, I’m sure we’ll achieve our objective, which is staying up.
“They had chances, but Pacheco was very good. We had some dangerous outlets to score a goal, like we did last year.
“Ultimately the goal came through the usual route [Messi]. His first free kick hit the crossbar, but then he fired it under the wall.”
“After that, the rest of the goals came, which was a shame for us. Still I’m delighted, we’ve been a team and we played against a great team.
Update on Sobrino
Abelardo opted to remove one of Alaves star men in the 70th minute leading many to question whether the 26-year-old forward had picked up an injury.
“Sobrino? He had cramp,” he explained. ” He was stiff, but it’s nothing serious. He was tired
“We won’t rest, our next two games are at home and there are no easy matches. , I think if the team play like they did here, we’ll win games.”
