Calleja blames mistakes for loss to Real Sociedad

Villarreal head coach Javi Calleja has called for his side to show some strength and fight following their 2-1 defeat at home to Real Sociedad.

New signing Gerard Moreno put the Yellow’s ahead and the hosts were the better for most of the game however too many mistakes at the back cost them.

Willian Jose capitalised on a poor Funes Mori touch to slam home and Calleja was given no respite with the second either.

Alvaro Gonzalez struggled to deal with a long forward ball and his swung leg failed to make any real connection  allowing substitute Juanmi to make no mistake from 25 yards out.

The Verdict

Despite the errors, Calleja feels his side deserved more from the game.

“I am very happy with the collective performance.” he told reporters after the game. “We have known how to interpret the game throughout, but we have to try to be more forceful.

“We started winning, but mistakes have cost us, they are specific errors, we have to try not to give away as gifts. ”

Yet Calleja believes his side could have done more especially with the opportunities made.

“I think that throughout the game we had enough chances,” he added. “Although we did not manage to close the match.

“The team has tried it until the end, but we have lacked success to overcome the defense of Real Sociedad “.

Give them time to gel

The hosts had no less than seven players debutantes starting at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Saturday evening.

Amongst the new signings were Santi Cazorla and Manu Morlanes, both Calleja thought had good games.

“Cazorla has contributed both creatively and in a defensive way too.” he said. “He is at a good level and I am sure he will get better the more he plays.

“On the other hand, Morlanes has a lot of quality on the ball and that is positive.”
