Athletic Bilbao 2-1 Leganes: Muniain steals the show with 93rd minute winner

Athletic Bilbao got their La Liga season off to a winning start after a late stoppage time goal against Leganes at the San Mames.

The final game of round one in the opening weekend of La Liga did not disappoint as both Athletic and Leganes put on a free-flowing attacking show at the San Mames.

Athletic took the lead after 27 minutes from a corner which was whipped in by Markel Susaeta and the ball was flicked into Ivan Cuellar’s far post, by 19 year-old defender Peru Nolaskoain.

Minutes later though, Leganes were level, Nabil El Zhar had the beating of Yuri Berchiche, and his low cross found Eraso, who squared the ball for Gerard Gumbau, his shot was blocked and fell to the feet of Jonathan Silva, whose shot took a light deflection, which guided the ball past a helpless Unai Simon.

In the 93rd minute, Bilbao had the winner. The ball was eventually played out to the right-hand side where Raul Garcia delivered a low-driven cross which seemed to go through multiple Athletic and Leganes players, but it definitely didn’t evade Iker Muniain, who was left completely unmarked and slotted the ball past Cuellar.
