Reports in Germany claim that Bayern Munich identify Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann as a key target for next season and are willing to pay the Frenchman’s £200 million release fee.
Bild state that senior figures at the Allianz Arena are satisfied with the squad for this season as they look to remain the dominant force in the Bundesliga as well as targeting Champions League success, however with players like Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery reaching the twilight of their careers, a new superstar will need to be acquired.
It is believed that Bayern President Uni Hoeness knows that a move for Griezmann would prove fruitless during this summer’s transfer window, especially given that the Frenchman publically announced his intention in a drawn out documentary to remain an Atleti player this summer, signing an extended deal at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2023. A lot may depend on how the Rojiblancos perform this season following much investment however, and should Atleti fail to pick up any silverware, a move for the 27 year-old could be a lot easier than expected.
Griezmann failed to score in Monday night’s draw with Valencia and was replaced in the 72nd minute by new boy Gelson Martins. He grabbed 19 goals in the league last season, ensuring he was Atleti’s top goalscorer, and with the arrivals of playmakers such as Martins, Thomas Lemar and Rodri, will be looking to grab even more this term for last season’s runners up.
The German newspaper continue by stating that if a move for Griezmann becomes impossible, Bayern will then turn their attention towards Juventus striker Paolo Dybala.
