In their pursuit to shore up their midfield, PSG are in pursuit of Ivan Rakitic. It looks to be another summer of drama between PSG and Barcelona.
According to reports, the Parisian side are willing to spend €90 million for the Croatian midfielder. PSG has asked permission to speak with Rakitic to gauge the player’s interest before making an offer. His release clause currently sits at €125 million. Based on what they paid for Neymar, that release clause is well within range.
Reaching a deal will be difficult as Rakitic is an important player for Ernesto Valverde. He played nearly every game last season and saw minutes in Barcelona’s Super Cup win despite reaching the World Cup final with Croatia.
PSG’s interest in the midfielder may have to do with the interest Barcelona have shown in one of their own midfielders, Adrien Rabiot. Barcelona have been linked with Rabiot for a while and the player himself has rejected renewal offers from PSG.
However, any sort of discussions between the two clubs should be more amicable than it was during the Neymar saga.
On the player’s part, Rakitic wants to continue at the club as he knows he is a vital piece of the squad. But he does want to see some sort of gesture from Barcelona. In this case, that means an increase in wages.
Barcelona are a club where their wage bill is already exceedingly high so, from the club’s part, a wage increase is not in the cards.
The offer from PSG does mean an increase in pay for Rakitic. He has a contract until 2021 but the wage promised by PSG might be too good to pass up. Barcelona will do their best to keep the midfielder as he’s been consistently good and, as mentioned, is one of Valverde’s most trusted players.
He arrived in Barcelona in 2014 from Sevilla for €18 million. He’s become one of Barcelona’s best signings in recent memory.
