Valladolid host Barcelona on Saturday, August 25th, looking for their first win of the season. This will be the first match between the two sides in nearly four and a half years.
Valladolid were one of the teams promoted from the second division. In their opening fixture, they played to a scoreless draw, on the road, against Girona.
Barcelona, on the other hand, started their league campaign, at home, against Deportivo Alaves. The Catalans were held scoreless in the first half but scored three times, Messi scoring twice, in the second half.
As mentioned, it is the first time these two sides are meeting in four and a half years. The last time these teams met, Valladolid pulled off a historic upset, defeating Barcelona by a score of 1-0. On that occasion, it was the Italian, Fausto Rossi, netting the goal for the home side.
Valladolid will be hoping that lightning strikes twice.
Barcelona will be facing a familiar face in as Jordi Masip is Valladolid’s starting goalkeeper. Masip was a Barcelona player during their treble-winning season in 2014-2015 but left in 2017 in search of playing time.
Valladolid will be without Ivi Lopez, their summer signing, as he is still recovering from an achilles injury. They’ll also be without Luismi Sanchez and David Mayoral.
As for Barcelona, Denis Suarez, Sergi Samper, and Carles Aleña are recovering from injuries. Also, backup keeper, Jasper Cillessen, injured his ribs during training and is unlikely to make the trip. Jokin Ezkieta, the Barcelona B keeper, will take his place.
