Real Valladolid took on Barcelona for the first time in nearly four years. The last meeting between the two sides resulted in a 1-0 for Valladolid.
However, the story of the first-half centered around the state of the pitch at the Estadio José Zorrilla. The playing surface had only been installed a few days ago and quickly became evident. Divots on the pitch were a constant and it had an effect on the game.
On the pitch, Valladolid had the first shot of the game through Enes Ünal. But Barcelona would take control of the game midway through the half. The Catalans threatened on the left with Alba-Coutinho-Dembele linking up rather well. Perhaps due to the pitch, Lionel Messi had a quiet game.
Coutinho had one of Barcelona’s best chances as he tried placing a shot from just outside the box that was well-saved by Jordi Masip. Luis Suárez also had a chance to open up the score, but took a bit too long to shoot as his eventual shot ricocheted off Masip.
The teams ended at half-time with a scoreless draw.
The deadlock was broken in the 57th minute as Dembélé scored for the visiting side. Luis Suárez lobbed a pass to Sergi Roberto who headed the ball back to Dembélé and one-timed his shot past the outstretched hand of Masip. It was the first significant contribution from Su´arez and the goal was well-deserved for Dembélé who was Barcelona’s best player on the night.
Malcom made his Barcelona debut late in the game and had a chance to increase Barcelona’s lead but his shot was saved by Masip.
For Valladolid, they had a half-chance in the 74th minute as Sergi Roberto slipped which led to a counter by the home side. Fortunately for the Catalans, the threat only led to a corner.
But, perhaps the moment that everyone will be talking about is how Valladolid almost equalizer in stoppage time. A cross was sent inside the box as Cop headed past Ter Stegen. Fans and players alike were celebrating the goal but the referee went to VAR as there was a hint of offside. Indeed, after the review, the goal was disallowed for offside. While the home side disagreed, it was the correct call.
Barcelona now make it two wins on the bounce whereas Valladolid are still looking for their first win of the season.
