Alaves boss Abelardo has said his side deserved the 0-0 draw with Real Betis at the weekend after what he called ‘a solid second half display’.
An opening day fixture with Barcelona left nothing to the imagination, seeing the Basque side lose 3-0 to the champions – so much of their attention turned to facing Quique Setien’s side on Saturday.
And, despite the game being an end-to-end encounter – the former Barca defender’s side grabbed a point off the Europa League hopefuls.
The hosts, Alaves, had little of the possession, but in fact – had more chances than their Andalusian visitors – but the deadlock failed to be broken by either side.
A point sees them get their season underway, and Abelardo has been left happy following the performance with his side’s tactical display in the second half.
“We had a very good second half, in the first – they had a lot of possession, but we adjusted ourselves to match it,” he told reporters after the game.
“We risked more pressure and we were better positioned, we recovered balls well and if we had scored, we would have won the game.
“”The team will gradually get the tone and we will see if in the next game, instead of 45 minutes of pressure that I like, we can do it a bit more.”
Fitness update on Rodrigo Ely
The Brazilian defender struggled for fitness during pre-season due to problems with his knee and he has been spending time in the United States to undergo examinations and recovery on the problem.
Despite claims that he could return to full fitness last week – it has now been confirmed that he will spend a further two weeks away.
Ely joined Alaves in January 2017 from the Italian side and saw his move made permanent last summer, featuring in 31 games for the Basque side last season, scoring once.
