Villarreal midfielder Santiago Caseres has been ruled out for eight weeks and replaced by Manuel Iturra on a free transfer.
Yellow Submarine boss Javier Calleja was left fuming at his luck after seeing Caseres be taken off against Girona on Friday night, which saw his midfield options reduced, given the recovery periods of Bruno Soriano and Javi Fuego.
Caseres has now been ruled out for eight weeks, leaving Calleja and the club with no option to look at the transfer market and a number of unattached players.
Iturra left Malaga following the Andalucian side’s relegation to La Liga 123 at the end of last season and has been without a club ever since, but the Yellow Submarine have offered him a one year deal.
He went through a club medical on Tuesday morning and was announced via the club’s official website later in the day.
The Chilean midfielder has played a total of 115 games in the Spanish top flight with Malaga, Granada and Rayo Vallecano and also spent time in Italy with Udinese and Mexico with Necaxa.
Friday night’s loss at home to Girona was Villarreal’s second home defeat of the season, having lost to Real Sociedad on the opening day and they currently sit in the relegation zone as one of five teams still waiting on their first league victory of the season.
Despite playing well they went down 1-0 to a Cristhian Stuani goal nine minutes into the second half but they’ll have to wait until the 15th of September to have the chance to get their first win when they travel to the capital to face Leganes.
