Antoine Griezmann has reacted after being snubbed by FIFA for the Ballon d’Or.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who guided his club to a Champions League victory and his country – to the World Cup final, where they were defeated by France – is joined by former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who has now joined Juventus – on the list of three nominees for the award.
Mohamed Salah of Liverpool is also included, meaning Griezmann has missed out, despite playing a pivotal role in Atletico Madrid’s Europa League success and his country’s World Cup victory in Russia.
Griezmann is joined by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in missing out on the chance to be named the best player in the world.
The Frenchman believes that he cannot do anymore to be in with a chance of winning the award.
“This year has been great, ” he told Marca. “I have won more trophies, it has been the best.
“It is strange and a shame (not being nominated). This is a FIFA trophy right, and they organise the World Cup. We won it and there is not one French player on the list.
“It will not be unfair if I do not win it, but I will wonder what else I have to do. I have won trophies and had decisive moments in key games. But, I do not vote.”
Filipe Luis discusses Atleti exit wishes
The Brazilian defender was linked with a summer exit after citing a desire to join Paris Saint Germain and link up with compatriots Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Neymar.
However, after on and off talks with the French club, Atleti refused to budge on their stance and did not allow the left-back to leave the Wanda Metropolitano.
Luis, who was keen to leave, spoke earlier this week about how he asked the club to allow him an exit like Gabi, who left this summer.
“The chance to go to PSG came and I asked Atletico to allow me to leave on a free, ” he told Globoesporte. “I asked to be released in the same way they did with Gabi, but the club understood that it was not the same situation.”
