Girona’s various supporters groups are unhappy with the decision for the Catalan derby with Barcelona to played in United States.
After last month’s announcement by La Liga that the league was to begin playing one game per season in America, they now appear to have decided on the first game.
Catalan rivals Girona and Barcelona will go head to head in Florida on Sunday 27th January 2019 according to Diario SPORT.
This is despite the captains of all 20 La Liga clubs campaigning against the decision to move games outwith Spain but it seems as though La Liga are going to go ahead with the decision.
Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, home of NFL side Miami Dolphins, is believed to be the venue for the game at the start of next year.
The game would replace the meeting at the Montilivi with Girona being classed as the home team in the USA. This would of course mean one less home game for season ticket holders but the club have a plan in place.
However, the decision has been met with anger from Girona’s supporters groups, with the Federation Penas del Girona releasing a statement which read:
“Given the lack of information and the opacity of the club in relation to the possibility of Girona FC playing their home game against FC Barcelona in the US and that has leaked to the media, we ask the club that it is essential to make public the official position and summon the Federation in order to be able to transmit the agreements between LFP and the club to all members, subscribers and supporters.”
Season ticket holders would be offered one of 1500 free aeroplane tickets although they would require a €500 deposit which would be returned at the end of the trip.
