Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has held a meeting with Porto captain Hector Herrera, according to various reports across Spain.
Diario AS are amongst those to report the claims which say Lopetegui held a meeting with the Mexican, who he formerly coached during his time with the Portuguese club.
Madrid are said to be interested in signing the central midfielder as they look to freshen up their options in January, with multiple reports claiming they need to spend some of their earned cash in the winter transfer window.
Lopetegui spent two seasons with Porto between 2014 and 2016 – managing Herrera, who arrived at the club in 2013.
Whilst some claims report that a move could be made in January – it is understood that the option of a free transfer next summer could instead be agreed.
Herrera has just one year remaining on his current deal at the Estadio Dragao and the reports claim he and Lopetegui met each other in a hotel over the international break.
The Mexican international is keen to move to a bigger league after five seasons with the Portuguese giants and could provide competition for the likes of Casemiro and Luka Modric, whilst he could replace Mateo Kovacic, who will be allowed to leave upon return of his loan spell with Chelsea.
