Mauricio Pellegrino remains without a win whilst in charge of Leganes after a home defeat to Villarreal, who picked up their first victory of the 2018/19 campaign on Sunday.
It was a hard fought first half in which Leganes looked the better side with more chances and more possession, though their rivals did look a threat on the break.
Javi Calleja’s men had their slice of luck though, as Mario Gaspar handled in the box and the visitors escaped unharmed. A penalty was awarded but after a clear row between Guido Carillo and Nabil El-Zhar over who would take the spot kick, the former skewed his effort high and wide.
Only 15 minutes later, Miguel Layun’s free-kick was nodded in by substitute Carlos Bacca to break the deadlock and give the team in yellow the lead.
Layun went close again late on, smashing a free-kick against the post, though Leganes refused to lie down and had a Michael Santos header ruled out for offside.
A late clash between Victor Ruiz and Unai Bustinza could have easily led to a red card after hands were raised to the Leganes’ man’s face, but it ended with a yellow apiece and the full-time whistle minutes later.
Next up for the Yellow Submarine is Europa League action in midweek where they will face Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.
