Eduardo Berizzo did himself huge favours as he masterminded his side to a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the weekend.
Athletic have played one less game than everyone else in La Liga after their game against Rayo Vallecano was postponed due to stadium problems, but those three opening fixtures played have left fans of the club questioning Berizzo’s ideas.
An opening day win over Leganes was followed by a 2-2 draw with La Liga new-boys Huesca.
Heading into the game with Julen Lopetegui’s Real Madrid on Saturday evening, Athletic were not favourites but they produced a solid performance to gain a point and upset Los Blancos’ impressive start to the season.
Critic has been made towards Berizzo and his style of play so far this season, but his tactical approach to the game with the Champions League winners left fans happy and Marca have gone as far to say ‘it was a night that needed to happen’ for the Basque club.
The tough La Liga fixture list continues for Berizzo’s men at the weekend as they travel to Seville to face Real Betis, before next week’s midweek game with Villarreal on the 26th.
Athletic currently sit 7th in the La Liga standings on seven points from three games and remain one of four unbeaten sides.
