Lionel Messi scored a superb hat-trick to get Barcelona’s Champions League campaign off to the best possible start against PSV.
Upon returning from the international break, Barca had to work hard in their La Liga game against Real Sociedad at the weekend but a 2-1 victory set them up nicely for the visit of Dutch side PSV.
The game was as typical as a Camp Nou fixture gets as the home side dominated from start to finish, mustering up 21 shots on the visiting goal.
Messi, who failed to score at the Anoeta on Saturday – made up for his rare blank and opened the scoring with a superb curling free-kick and added two more later in the game, Ousmane Dembele spun two PSV defenders and hit a superb curling effort into the bottom corner.
Samuel Umtiti was then sent off for Barca after a second booking but it mattered not on the night as Messi was determined to take home the match ball and scored his hat trick late on, beating Jeroen Zoet from close range.
Who was the best Barcelona player on the night?
Ter Stegen: Had very little to do in the Barca goal. His distribution was as always, good. 6
Sergi Roberto: As hard working as ever, but had little to do in terms of defending. 6
Gerard Pique: Sometimes looks off the pace, but can recover with sensible football. 6
Samuel Umtiti: A silly double booking, but took one for the team with the second. 5
Philippe Coutinho: A quieter night by his high standards. Still good. 7
Ivan Rakitic: Superb assist for Messi. As good as ever. 8
Sergio Busquets: Leave him out, you struggle as Barca did against La Real. He is important. 8
Lionel Messi: Another masterclass from the most consistent footballer on the planet. 10
Luis Suarez: Still settling into the new season, but hungry to do so. 7
Ousmane Dembele: Dodgy on the ball, but scored arguably the goal of the game. 7
Clement Lenglet, Arthur and Arturo Vidal: Little minutes for three summer signings. 5,5,5
The win puts Barca top of Group B, level on points with Inter Milan, who came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at the San Siro.
