Ivan Alejo was sent off for Getafe as Thomas Lemar netted in the 2-1 win for Atletico Madrid.
It has not been the most perfect start for Diego Simeone’s side this season, having not hit their heavy heights on the pitch and suffered a number of injuries.
But, they produced a good performance to beat Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez to set themselves up for next week’s Madrid derby.
Frenchman Lemar struck a sweet 30-yard strike to get on the score sheet for Atleti, however, it will go down as an own goal after hitting home keeper David Soria on the back.
Atleti did then struggle to re-find their rhythm, but Lemar did get a goal he could claim as his own, composing himself well and making it 2-0 after the half-time break.
Getafe finished with 10 men after substitute Ivan Alejo was sent off for a straight red.
Diego Simeone’s side are up to fifth in the La Liga table after a first away win of the season and will now approach next week in winning form.
They entertain newly promoted Huesca on Tuesday (21:00 BST kick-off) before facing Real Madrid, who beat Espanyol this weekend; at the Bernabeu on Saturday (19:45 BST).
