Abelardo refusing to look at La Liga table

Alaves boss Abelardo has said he does not look at the La Liga table at this point in the season, despite his side having won again this weekend.

The home side, Rayo Vallecano, had the majority of the ball in the first few minutes of the game and Alvaro Garcia had the first chance of the game, receiving the ball in the area but he could not make his effort count.

Alaves slowly grew into the game and it was the visitors who opened the scoring when Ibai Gomez was fouled and Ximo Navarro found the back of the net.

Gael Kakuta was doing his very best to get the home side back into the game and he found Raul de Tomas in the 30th minute to level the tie, but the goal failed to spur on the home side, who had wanted to bring joy back to the fans of the Vallecas after the ground was closed recently due to safety concerns.

The game was not tied for long as Ibai Gomez got himself on the scoresheet, and the home side suffered more upset when Abdoulaye Ba was sent off a minute later.

Goals from Jonathan Calleri, another from Ibai Gomez and a stoppage time strike from Burgui further enhanced the scoreline for the away side, who continue their impressive start to the season.

What did Abelardo have to say about his side’s heroics?

“We have now achieved a quarter of what we want to achieve this season. I do not look at the league table at this point in the season,” he told reporters.

“I see that we are solid and that we are playing well, but I try to focus on a day at a time and prepare well.”

The former Barcelona defender also touched on the form of Ibai Gomez, who scored an impressive brace in the win.

“Ibai has been very good. He has scored three goals in the last two games and although I do not like to praise just one player – I think he has done a superb job.”
