Villarreal 0-0 Valencia: Lacklustre affair as visitors yet to win this seasonSeptember 23, 2018
Valencia’s winless run continues this season after being held to a stalemate by nearby rivals Villarreal.
Their situation was not helped when captain Dani Parejo was given his marching orders with over half an hour still left to play.
The second half turned this into a lacklustre affair, one not worthy of its usual tensions.
Their accuracy in front of goal was the cause for a goalless draw with the two sides having a combined 23 shots – but only getting three on target.
Exciting first half turned drab
The match started with plenty of intensity, as Gabriel Paulista and Ferran Torres narrowly failing to convert for Valencia.
But Villarreal struggled to find their feet in the game and would have been glad to go in all square at half-time.
But the second period did not start with the same momentum as the first.
Only when Parejo was shown a straight red for his studs-up tackle just before the hour mark did the game liven up.
Goncalo Guedes was not far away when he fired low – but Sergio Asenjo in the Yellow Submarine goal was equal to it.
Then there was the introduction of Santi Cazorla that seemed to give Villarreal some life in an otherwise cautious affair.
Valencia’s winless run continues
Yet, Valencia still had the better chances, with former Yellow Submarine attacker Denis Cheryshev going close to breaking the deadlock.
But Asenjo once again made a brilliant save to keep the scores level.
It also sees Valencia extend their winless streak in all competitions to six matches – but still rise to 15th after a third draw in a row in La Liga.
Villarreal are just a point ahead and survive any side effects from their draining Europa League tie against Rangers on Thursday.
