Eduardo Berizzo has bemoaned Markel Susaeta’s red card against Real Betis, which he says cost his side three points.
The Basque side have had a moderately good start to the new La Liga season and they looked odds on to gain another impressive result after taking a 2-0 lead at the Benito Villamarin on Sunday evening.
Goals from Inaki Williams and Raul Garcia in the first 15 minutes but a sending off to Susaeta on the 45th minute saw the struggle to hold on their lead and relinquish two points to Quique Setien’s side.
Marc Bartra and Sergio Canales scored second half goals to share the points and in truth, the visitors were lucky not lose after a late surge from the Andalusians.
Berizzo, who arrived over the summer – masterminded a draw with Real Madrid last week and he said that the sending off of Susaeta caused them to change their game plan and attempt to hold on to a point.
“It was our game, until the sending off and then we had to change. 11v11, I really liked how we played and we did well, but we had to change when we went to 10,” The former Celta Vigo coach told reporters after the game.
“I always see things from a positive point of view, I think against Huesca we lost two points but tonight against one of our rivals, we rescued a point.”
With the result, Athletic are in 12th, level on points with Betis and they will now prepare to face Villarreal on Wednesday before travelling to the Camp Nou at the weekend to face champions, Barcelona.
