Real Sociedad boss Asier Garitano has defended under-fire keeper Geronimo Rulli after another mistake in the 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano.
Garitano approached the mid-week game, hoping to rest a number of players for the weekend’s match against Valencia, but it almost back-fired on the former Leganes coach.
Asier Illarramendi, Willian Jose and Zurutuza were all left on the bench, whilst Theo and Juanmi were suspended after being sent off against Huesca last weekend.
Rayo, have been struggling so far this season but they produced a good performance at the Anoeta.
Jon Bautista opened the scoring for the home side and things looked as though, they would go their way but a six minute spree from Rayo saw them go 2-1 ahead.
Luis Advincula and an Oscar Trejo penalty put the visitors to the good, but they failed to hold on in the second half.
Willian Jose was hauled off the bench by Garitano, whilst both Illarramendi and Zurutuza both came on too.
And, it was the former who rescued a point for his side, sparing the blushes of Garitano – who was lucky that his decision to the rest the three aforementioned did not see his team lose.
The game saw keeper Rulli come under more pressure from home fans after a number of poor performances this season, but Garitano has backed his keeper.
“The whistles I have heard before today, ” he told reporters. “I think that will continue, but we do not like to hear them. We know they are part of football, but Rulli made a good save leading up to the one goal. We will help him and I am calm and certain of him.
“I think he is a good keeper.”
La Real now face Valencia at the weekend, whilst Rayo face Espanyol.
