Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening, with neither side prepared to gamble sufficiently to get the win in the first meeting since Atletico won the previous derby in the UEFA Super Cup.
Atletico started the better side too, dominating much of the first half with Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa both drawing superb saves out of Thibaut Courtois after breaking through the Real Madrid defence.
After the break, which coincided with the enforced withdrawal of an injured Gareth Bale for Dani Ceballos, Real Madrid slowly grew back into the game.
Marco Asensio went closest for the hosts with one effort forcing Jan Oblak into a fine stop to keep the scores level, but there were also strong penalty shouts for handball waved away as both Casemiro and later Sergio Ramos protested their innocence.
There was also a late debut for Vinicius Junior as a substitute in the closing moments of the encounter as Julen Lopetegui looked for a way to win the tie, but it was too little too late and the two teams were forced to settle for a draw.
