Gelson Martins is struggling at Atletico Madrid and will not be involved on Wednesday night against Club Brugge.
The 23-year-old arrived at the Wanda Metropolitano from Sporting CP this summer under a wave of expectation, but his impact thus far has been minimal with injury problems and a lack of minutes contributing to that.
The Portuguese international is yet to make a league start for Atleti, featuring in three games from the substitutes bench and culminating 57 minutes in total.
Martins has now been left out of the Champions League squad for the game against Brugge on Wednesday.
Whilst Marca claim the exemption is down to a knee injury, which stopped the winger from training on Monday and Tuesday – many believe that his form has also played a factor.
Simeone fully focused on Brugge tie
After picking up an opening day win in the Champions League over AS Monaco, Atleti are hoping to continue their run in the competition and make up for their early exit from the competition last season.
An improvement in form domestically sees the Spanish side as the favourites on Wednesday and Simeone has spoken to reporters about the fixture.
“We made improvements and played well at the Bernabeu at the weekend, but I will repeat again that Brugge are direct and very dangerous.
“They are good in the air and we will have to focus very hard defensively and that is what we are focused on.
In the other Group A game, Monaco will face Borussia Dortmund.
