Real Valladolid 1-0 Huesca: Alcaraz’s stunning free-kick hands hosts victoryOctober 8, 2018
A brilliant free-kick from Rubén Alcaraz gave Real Valladolid all three points against fellow La Liga new boys SD Huesca on Sunday afternoon.
The opening 10 minutes at the Estadio José Zorrilla got off to a quiet start between the two newly promoted teams with neither side launching a full-scale attack on goal.
In the 11th minute, Huesca saw their first chance on goal easily saved by goalkeeper Masip before later protesting referee Mateu Lahoz’s decision to hand both Gürler and Chimy Ávila yellow cards.
Afterwards, Valladolid upped the momentum in search of a goal with Cop missing a great chance in the 23rd minute when he failed to capitalise on Míchel’s through ball.
The hosts later claimed for a penalty after a Huesca defender handled the ball in the area before it went in for a corner kick. But Lahoz refused to allow the spot-kick as the ball was handled involuntarily.
Valladolid then took a first-half lead in the 28th minute of the game with Alcaraz scoring a wonderful free-kick, which left Huesca goalkeeper Jovanovic unable to do anything about it.
After the break, Huesca needed a response and tried to equalise right away. But midfielder Chimy Ávila could not get past the Valladolid defence.
Masip then stopped another chance for Leo Franco’s side by saving Gürler’s right-sided shot.
Valladolid thought they had added a second when winger Leo Suárez found the net in the 51st minute, but referee Lahoz disallowed the goal after intervention from VAR due to Ünal being in an offside position during Nacho’s assist.
Despite the setback, Los Blanquivioletas remained determined to find another goal with most of their offensive plays coming from the left wing.
Meanwhile, Huesca struggled to create any opportunities to bring the scoreline back level with Ferreiro’s penalty appeal in the 77th-minute being waved away by Lahoz.
Ultimately, the scoreline would remain 1-0 with Alcaraz’s free-kick in the first-half securing Valladolid a third successive win and sixth-place in La Liga for the time being.
