Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema who got injured during Saturday’s loss at Alaves is reported to have suffered a hamstring injury which Spanish media say could keep the Frenchman out of action for two weeks.
The European Champions released a statement on their website, “Following tests carried out today on our player Karim Benzema by the Real Madrid medical team, he has been diagnosed with an injury to his right hamstring,”.
The Madrid club have failed to put a time scale on how long he will be out for, but speculation is mounting that he could now miss the game against Barca.
Benzema joins Marcelo, Isco and Dani Carvajal on the sidelines at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 30-year-old has netted five goals this season but has failed to score in his last seven appearances, but has been unable to help Madrid score recently – having failed to net in their last four games.
Pressure is now firmly on boss Julen Lopetegui and multiple reports have claimed that chief Florentino Perez is already looking at potential replacements for the former Spanish national coach.
Benzema like Gareth Bale, was subbed off against Alaves at the weekend as they failed to take their chances and the game ended 1-0 to Abelardo’s side – a result which leaves Madrid fourth behind Atletico Madrid in third, Barcelona in second and Sevilla, who will enjoy the international break as league leaders.
