Atletico Madrid are hoping the international break can help defender Stefan Savic recover from his current injury problem.
September 10, a month previous – was the last time that the former Manchester City defender was seen in action when he played for his country, Montenegro in the international break against Lithuania.
A scorer in that game, the captain came off injured and was unable to return to the Spanish capital fit – forcing medical reports to confirm that he would be missing several weeks with a ‘severe muscular contusion’.
Since that time, Savic has missed games against Eibar, Getafe, Huesca, Real Madrid, Real Betis and the Champions League fixtures against Monaco and Club Brugge.
Monday’s training session at the Ciudad Deportiva de Majadahonda saw the central defender remain in the background, doing light work in the gym along with keeper Jan Oblak, to recover, but club doctors are hoping he can use the next two weeks to recover fully.
From Atleti’s first team, only Juanfran, Gelson Martins and Nikola Kalinic took part in training, whilst Diego Simeone was given permission to return to Argentina following surgery on his father.
Following the international break, Atleti face Villarreal, before meeting Borussia Dortmund the following Wednesday.
