Barcelona have not won a league match in their last four attempts, now looking up at first-place Sevilla in LaLiga’s table. Manager Ernesto Valverde’s side are fortunate to still be within reach of the division’s summit, earning a point in their last fixture at Valencia. Issues at the back have been present, and now the Blaugrana could be without one of their top defenders for an extended period of time.
According to a piece from Sport earlier this week, Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti could be out of action for several months due to knee surgery. The club are certainly attempting to avoid that as their only option, as they want their talented centre-back contributing in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League.
The Frenchman has been out of the line-up since his squad’s shocking loss at Leganés last month. Umtiti displayed tremendous promise last term alongside Gerard Piqué, helping Barcelona to a league and cup double. The 24-year-old was also a part of France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup victory in Russia this past summer.
There is the possibility that surgery will not be required, but nothing has been confirmed at this time. Valverde will look to utilise Clément Lenglet and Thomas Vermaelen in central defence until a final decision is made.
Umtiti’s positioning and communication with Piqué will certainly be missed during this period, as Barcelona look to sharpen their abilities in their own half. The Catalans have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six league matches, allowing nine goals during that stretch.
Barcelona return from the international break for a massive match at the Camp Nou versus Sevilla on October 20, looking to re-gain their place at the top of the table.
Samuel Umtiti’s knee injury may prevent him from playing many more matches this season. Barcelona will of course be hoping that the surgery is not a necessity.
