Alaves coach Abelardo has said his focus remains on securing the club’s La Liga status for next season.
Heading into the game, Abelardo’s side knew that a win would see them top of the league, whilst the home side knew they had to win also – to turn around their poor form.
Alaves sat sixth before kick-off and they pressed early on with the likes of Ibai Gomez and Jonathan Calleri both having good chances.
Celta did have chances but Sofiane Boufal and Brais Mendez could do little to break the deadlock, seeing their efforts go wide of the Alaves goal.
The first half ended goal-less but it was just ten minutes after the break that saw the visitors open the scoring as Tomas Pina tapped home Victor Laguardia’s knock down following a free-kick.
Ibai Gomez was in superb form and he almost doubled the away side’s lead, but saw his chance go wide.
Emre Mor was introduced by the home side but the youngster could do little to turn the score around and the visitors held on to head into the weekend’s action – league leaders.
“Our goal is to continue next season in this division, ” Abelardo told reporters following the game. “We have enormous satisfaction of being top of the league, but it was not our intention.
“Of course it is amazing, we are playing very well. I am delighted with my players.”
Barcelona would later beat Sevilla to leapfrog Alaves, who remained second through to Sunday however, after both Real and Atletico Madrid failed to win.
