Mendilibar delighted with ‘superior’ Eibar

Jose Luis Mendilibar was delighted with his side after they held Athletic Bilbao to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors have now not won in La Liga since August and question marks are now focused on Eduardo Berizzo’s future at San Mames.

The opening goal of the came from the penalty spot and courtesy of VAR after a decision was made on Inigo Martinez. Charles took responsibility for the home side and dully scored, beating Iago Herrerin from 12 yards.

Neither first choice keepers were available for either side and it was Herrerin who proved to be vital for the away side, making a string of saves in the first half to keep the home side at bay.

The leveller did come from Athletic as Aritz Aduriz and Raul Garcia worked hard to carve an opening for Inaki Williams, who beat Asier Riesgo.

Pressure is now firmly on Berizzo to improve things with the Basque club, whilst Eibar sit comfortably in 12th position.

Mendilibar who spoke to reporters following the game, said: “What I liked the most about the game is that we let Athletic do very little, they scored the goal in an isolated classic play of them and little else, we played what we want and they have not, we have been the team who has been superior.”
