Borja Iglesias struck twice as Espanyol beat Huesca on Sunday to go second in the La Liga standings.
The top spots of LaLiga were given a new look this past weekend, and Espanyol were one of the clubs responsible for the changes. Borja Iglesias’ brace produced a 2-0 victory on Sunday at Huesca, with the result moving Los Periquitos into second place.
Espanyol are just one point behind local rival Barcelona in LaLiga’s table.
The game certainly took on a special meaning for manager Rubi, facing the Huesca side that he helped to lead into the top flight last season. That intimate knowledge of Huesca’s team appeared evident throughout the encounter, as Espanyol’s midfield enjoyed a dominant showing.
Esteban Granero and Marc Roca positioned themselves effectively to close down passing lanes for the home side, as Iglesias was a constant nuisance in the final third. The striker’s runs were quite effective, and he made the most of his opportunities with two goals.
For Huesca, the recent sacking of manager Leo Franco has not yet helped their current situation, still at the bottom of LaLiga. They will now prepare for a tough match at Sevilla on Sunday evening.
Espanyol are unbeaten in their last four league matches (three wins), and will aim to continue their fine form when they visit Real Valladolid on Friday.
