Julen Lopetegui: The dressing room is strong because we are champions

Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has said the dressing room is strong at the moment, despite a run of five games without a win.

The pressure is firmly on Julen Lopetegui, although the former Spanish national coach would have you thinking otherwise with his pre-match comments.

A defeat to Levante at the weekend has left Madrid sitting seventh in the La Liga table and heading into the weekend’s El Clasico tie as underdogs.

A win is a must against Plzen and a hat-full of goals would also go someway to appease a disgruntled Santiago Bernabeu.

Their opponents will head into the game having drawn with Bohemians at the weekend and losing to Roma in their opening group game.

“The changing room is strong because the players are champions and they’re not champions by coincidence, ” he told reporters. “They overcome tricky situations with that strength and that quality they have.

“The team is alive, very excited to put in a big performance tomorrow and are convinced that they can turn around the situation. There are positive examples from more adverse situations.”
