Alaves came from behind on Sunday evening to move second place in the La Liga table, beating Villarreal 2-1.
Like a few other La Liga managers around this weekend, pressure was firmly on Javi Calleja to improve the away side’s form and if you caught his side’s first half display – then you would have been confident.
Gerard Moreno was on hand to open the scoring after just ten minutes and send a shock to the home fans.
However, in truth – Alaves did not look shocked as they patiently grew into the game.
Abelardo’s side had pressure on themselves, knowing that they could go second behind league leaders Barcelona with a win.
And, they were full of celebration when former Las Palmas striker Jonathan Calleri fired in shortly after half time.
The game then went end to end as both sides pushed for a winner but the game defining goal did not come until the very last kick of the game.
Former Swansea City striker Borja Baston was on hand to not only put his side second, but to also condemn Villarreal to yet another defeat.
Calleja’s side now sit 17th in the league table, just one point off the relegation places and calls are now firmly being made for a change.
