Real Madrid sack Julen Lopetegui

Real Madrid have sacked Julen Lopetegui following the 5-1 El Clasico thumping from Barcelona.

The Spaniard took over from Zinedine Zidane in June but having lost their fifth in six games on Sunday evening at Camp Nou; Florentino Perez has made the decision to sack him.

The Champions League winners are currently sitting ninth in the La Liga table and are having their worst start since 2001/2002.

The 52-year-old, who was sacked as Spanish national coach just moments before the World Cup in Russia this past summer – will be replaced by Santiago Solari, coach of the B team at Madrid.

Lopetegui did take training on Monday morning but it proved to be his last after a board meeting in the afternoon.

He will receive 18m euros as compensation by the Spanish club, which is the remainder of his contract.

Solari was one of three men linked with the Madrid job over the last few weeks, along with Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte.

The former full-back will begin with a Spanish cup game against Melilla on Wednesday, before facing Real Valladolid at the weekend.

After losing El Clasico on Sunday to Barcelona, Madrid sit seven points off the league leaders in ninth position.
