Another weekend and another goal from Espanyol’s most expensive signing ever, Borja Iglesias, who is turning out to be the perfect replacement after Espanyol sold Gerard Moreno to Villarreal.
Last season Espanyol only scored 36 goals in the league, but 16 of them came from their Spanish striker Gerard Moreno. With him signing for Villarreal this summer in a €20 million move, Espanyol were in desperate need of a new striker.
Espanyol chose to replace Moreno with last season’s Zaragoza-top scorer Borja Iglesias, who was loaned out to the Segunda Division-side from Celta Vigo. Iglesias scored 23 goals in 43 official games for Zaragoza last season, and he just seems to continue his impressive form in La Liga.
Last weekend he scored a brace away against Huesca in Espanyol’s 2-0 victory, and on Friday Iglesias scored an absolute banger against Valladolid in the 1-1 draw.
The goal against Valladolid puts Iglesias on five goals with two assists in 10 games for the season, and if he continues this form, he will surely top Moreno’s goal tally from last season.
Espanyol are currently fifth in La Liga with 18 points in 10 games, and no one is probably missing Gerard Moreno, who is going through a tough period with Villarreal. The Yellow submarine has only gotten nine points for the season, and are just above the relegations spots.
