Copa del Rey: Gelson Martins strike gives Atleti victory over Sant Andreu

Gelson Martins earned Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over Sant Andreu as Valencia were also pushed by lower league opposition.

The round of 32 games in La Copa kicked off with Lugo hosting an in-form Levante side looking to have a real go at the cup this season, but the La Liga 123 side pushed Paco Lopez’ men to the end as they earned a 1-1 draw.

Cristian Herrera notched the opening goal on the 11th minute, before on-loan Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral levelled the tie and got a valuable away goal for the visitors.

CD Ebro, a third division side, gave Valencia a real game as they opened the scoring through Jonan Amelibia just after the hour mark.

Their lead didn’t last long though as the sending off prior to the opener to Tiago Portuga cost them and a brace from the lively Santi Mina all-but secured a rather more comfortable return leg for the La Liga side.

In the only La Liga tie of Tuesday’s fixtures, Leganes and Rayo Vallecano faced off in a entertaining clash which ended 2-2.

Alvaro Garcia Rivera opened the scoring, before Alex Alegria doubled the away side’s advantage but a spirited second half performance from the hosts saw two goals from Youssef En-Nesyri.

Finally, the fourth and final game on Tuesday saw Atletico Madrid pushed all the way by Catalan side Sant Andreu.

Diego Simeone’s side had Gelson Martins to thank for a slender 1-0 advantage but in truth it could have been more.
