Javi Calleja and Villarreal have had a horrible start to the La Liga season. The La Liga side has only gotten nine points in 10 games, which puts them just above the relegation spots before Sunday’s Levante match.
Javi Calleja’s job as Villarreal coach hangs by a thin thread. Calleja was given three games to turn the bad results around, after Villarreal lost 3-1 versus Espanyol on the 7th of October. Since then, Calleja’s troops have drawn one match against Atletico and lost one against Alaves in the league. In the Europa League, things have been a little better for the Yellow submarine, after they thrashed Rapid Wien with 5-0.
Although, Javi Calleja is yet to turn things around in La Liga, a win on Sunday could see him keeping his job for now. However, a game against Levante this season is not easy.
The Valencia-based team are in fine shape, especially because of Roger and Morales up front, and the pair could easily cause problems for the struggling Villarreal team on Sunday.
One of Villarreal’s biggest problems this season is the lack of goals. In the first 10 league games, the Yellow submarine has only scored eight. Gerard Moreno and Toko Ekambi were signed in the summer to fill the void, after Cedric Bakambu went to Beijing last winter. With two goals each, their goal tally is not dreadful, but the Villarreal-board was definitely hoping for some more.
Calleja’s future is possibly on the line on Sunday, and a loss against Levante could easily see him losing his job. That is why it is a must-win game at la Cerámica for Villarreal on Sunday.
