10-man Eibar denied Real Valladolid coach Sergio González the perfect birthday gift by holding his side to a 0-0 draw at home.
Determined to make Sergio’s 42nd birthday a day to remember, Las Blanquivioletas got off to a bright start.
The hosts at the Estadio José Zorrilla came close to taking the lead within six minutes after a great change of pace from Toni Villa set up Enes Ünal for the goal.
But the effort came to nothing after referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández ruled Villa out for offside.
It took 10 minutes for Eibar to have a chance on goal, but Valladolid goalkeeper Masip easily saved Orellana’s shot.
The visitors grew more comfortable as the game in Valladolid progressed.
However, Eibar could not threaten a Valladolid side who didn’t seem to struggle with or without possession of the ball.
Their best chance to score came when Fabián Orellana’s header forced Masip into a fine save.
The former Barcelona keeper later denied Joan Jordán just before the teams headed into the break.
In the second-half, Eibar looked more threating with an obvious intent of going all-out for goal.
The impressive Orellana proved to be a constant problem for the Valladolid defence and was only lacking a goal to cap off a brilliant display.
An ailing Valladolid team’s struggles became more clear with the hosts unable to manage even four consecutive passes.
But Sergio’s side were handed an unexpected lifeline in the 73rd-minute when Eibar’s Arbilla was dismissed with a second yellow card.
Arbilla’s dismissal changed the tide of the game with Eibar coach José Luis Mendilibar resorting to a more defensive approach.
Considering their new favoured circumstances, Valladolid became the more dangerous side and began to pile on the pressure.
Despite the home crowd cheering Valladolid on in the final minutes though, they were not clinical enough in front of goal.
The point, however, does move Sergio’s side up to seventh in La Liga for now with a daunting trip to Sevilla awaiting them next.
Meanwhile, Eibar are 12th in La Liga and with a resurgent Real Madrid awaiting them after the international break.
