Diego Godin produced a heroic performance to give Atletico Madrid three points against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend and his side now could claim to be favourites for the title.
Barcelona’s Gerard Pique, Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos – have and are missing this season. Typically over the years, both have been exemplary figures for their club’s, with the former propelling Barca to league titles and Ramos guiding Los Blancos to Champions League success.
Neither have been seen to be doing that this season and whilst you can be excused for looking at Barcelona and believing they sit comfortably at the top of the table – the Catalan side have simply no leadership.
Madrid are similar and Ramos has been a shadow of his usual self – despite a recent return to form under new coach Santiago Solari.
Godin, who has had a similar impact over the years with Atleti – simply – had a moment at the weekend.
The Uruguayan was left injured but could not be replaced due to Diego Simeone using all of his substitutes.
Playing up front, Godin played a massive part in helping his side complete a turn around by scoring the winner with minutes to go.
Atleti, who have lost just one league game this season, sit third – one point off Barcelona and they face Ernesto Valverde’s side following the international break.
Favourites? Atleti are now arguably that – not only for the game against Barca, but for the league title.
Heavily criticised in recent weeks for their cautious approach and defensive setup, Simeone’s side are in the best position in the league and Godin may have just given Pique and Ramos a reminder that every team, needs a leader and warrior.
Brace yourselves, Atleti are ready to win La Liga…….
