In the Monday evening meeting in La Liga, Real Sociedad finally got their first home win this season at their newly renovated Anoeta. That also meant that Miguel Cardoso lost his debut match after being promoted as manager for Celta Vigo.
Miguel Cardoso was definitely looking for a better start at Celta, than a loss in his first match. However, Sociedad played one of their best games of the season, and got a fully deserved 2-1 win, even though Celta did put pressure on the home team looking for an equaliser in the last part of the game.
From the start of the match, Sociedad was in possession of the ball and the game, with with a couple of chances falling for Mikel Oyarzabal. However, the always dangerous Iago Aspas was lurking in the other end, and after 20 minutes he almost put Celta in front, but Miguel Moya came well out of his goal.
Celta had both Gustavo Cabral and Hugo Mallo banned from their backline, and Sociedad´s first goal came after some horrible defending.
Jozabed lost the ball, and after a couple of missed chances to kick the ball away, it fell for Oyarzabal who scored his fourth goal in his last five matches.
Just after halftime, David Zurutuza made a great run in the box and scored a banging header from an outstanding cross by Adnan Januzaj. Both of them played a really good game, and just a couple of minutes after, Zurutuza almost scored his second, but his header peeled off the crossbar.
After 78 minutes, Zurutuza was substituted off and given a big applause from the supporters.
Zurutuza´s substitution gave Celta some more space in the midfield, and Aspas went deeper and trying to create something. Celta managed to put pressure on, and after 82 minutes they scored a great goal.
Brais Méndez, who scored his first goal for Spain last week, delivered a perfect cross for Maxi Gómez who scored a powerful header.
Both teams had chances at the end with Celta going for the equalizer, but Sociedad ended up with the fully deserved victory.
Sociedad is now number 8 in the La Liga standings, while Celta is having a tough time at number 15.
