Juventus v Valencia – Allianz Stadium – 20:00 GMT
Valencia crashed out of the Champions League after being beaten 1-0 by Juventus, while Manchester United grabbed a late-gasp winner against Young Boys.
Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic opened his Champions League account for this season as he fired past goalkeeper Neto from close range after Cristiano Ronaldo’s pass.
The home side were the ones who started the brightest with star man, Ronaldo going close on two occasions. First with a flashing volley from outside the box before moments later unleashing a shot from the edge of the box after some great build up play from the Bianconeri.
Valencia needing a win here to keep their hopes of going through alive went close around the half an hour mark when Danish international Daniel Wass glanced a shot inches wide of the left post after latching on to a cross from the edge of the box.
Marcelino and his men should have gone 1 nil up on the stroke of half time when Mouctar Diakhaby rose highest from the corner but for his effort to thunderbolt the underside of the crossbar and brilliantly kept out by goalkeeper Woijech Szczesny.
Both sides decided to make substitutions after the break and to the surprise of many, key striker Rodrigo was replaced by French forward Kevin Gameiro while Juve replaced left back Alex Sandro with Juan Cuadrado.
After the veteran striker fired the Old Lady ahead, around the hour mark, the home side stepped it up a gear but failed to add to the score line with some sensational shot stopping from Brazilian keeper Neto.
Mandzukic could have added to his tally, minutes after scoring his first when he sent a rebound back towards goal but for the keeper to pulling a great diving save.
The 29-year old shot stopper was on hand again, this time denying fellow South American Paulo Dybala. Argentinian forward, Dybala received a defence splitting pass to put him through from Miralem Pjanic, but the Brazilian was on hand to finger tip around the post after guessing which corner the striker was heading.
Former Real Madrid striker, Ronaldo was denied again after he peeled away from his marker at the back post, but his fine header was brilliantly saved at the right post.
Valencia unfortunately head out of the Champions League after only winning once in the competition this season and meaning the final fixture against Manchester United is now a dead rubber.
