Barcelona won a tight game, with Lionel Messi being the main man once again with a brilliant goal and an assist. With the victory, Barca secured themselves a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Philips Stadion in Eindhoven sat a brilliant stage for an entertaining match between PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona in the second last game of the group stages in the Champions League.
PSV began the game great, with a couple of chances falling for Gaston Pereiro and Luuk De Jong. In the early stages of the game, Barca had a hard time getting their game flowing, and after 15 minutes, PSV almost came in front.
Gaston Pereiro took a shot from outside the box and it knocked off the post. The ball fell for Uruguayan after a huge mistake from Ivan Rakitic. A lot of the Barca players did not look ready at the start of the game, as they were making a lot of stupid errors like the one from the Croatian playmaker.
After 24 minutes another chance fell for Pereiro, but somehow his shot went over Ter Stegen´s goal. At that time, it should have been 1-0 to PSV.
Just after half an hour, the first chances fell for Barca. Messi took two corners in a row were Arturo Vidal almost scored on the both of them, but his headers were saved on the line.
Before halftime, a header from Luuk De Jong hit the crossbar, and on the follow-up, Steven Bergwijn should have scored but somehow he missed.
Barca started the second half like a new team in a much higher tempo. After 48 minutes, Messi came close, but a save from Jeroen Zoet denied him.
Just around the hour, it was time for some Messi magic. The Argentinian received the ball, just over the middle of the pitch and drove it forward. After a one-two pass with Ousmane Dembele and leaving a couple of defenders in his dust, Messi took a great shot and scored with no chance for Zoet in goal. A signature Messi goal some would say.
After 70 minutes it looked like Gerard Pique closed the game. Everyone thought Messi was going to shot from a free-kick, but instead, he delivered the ball for Pique who hit it the first time to put it behind Zoet for 2-0.
In the closing stages of the match both Bergwijn and Hirving Lozano came very close to scoring and ten minutes before the final whistle, De Jong reduced Barca´s lead with a beautiful header.
Before the final whistle, both teams had the chances to score, but once again Lozano missed a huge chance. That meant that Barca took a 2-1 victory in Eindhoven, in a game were PSV deserved at least a point.
