Athletic Bilbao have sacked Eduardo Berizzo after just one win in 14 league games, it has been confirmed.
Peru Nolaskoain was sent off for the Basque side at the Ciudad de Valencia as Athletic crashed to another defeat.
Goals from Chema, Jose Campana and Roger Marti ensured that Berizzo’s side have now only won one of their opening 14 games in La Liga.
Sitting in 18th place, three points off Villarreal – pressure was firmly put on the Argentine’s shoulders to turn things around.
The former Celta Vigo boss spoke to reporters following the defeat about handing in his resignation, but that decision has now been taken out of his hands.
One victory, just 14 goals and their poor La Liga standing has now seen the club sack Berizzo, installing youth coach Gaizka Garitano as his replacement.
Garitano has previous first-team managerial experience at the likes of Real Valladolid, Eibar and Deportivo La Coruna.
Thursday evening’s Copa del Rey clash with Huesca may prove as a rest bite for the Basque side, given that they are 4-0 ahead after the first leg – however, with their current form and failure not to concede – anything could happen.
It will now be interested to see if Garitano can get something new out of the squad.
